Top 10 Tax Deductions Darwin Workers Miss Every Year

Every year at tax time, thousands of Darwin workers lodge their own returns and leave significant money on the table — not because they are dishonest, but simply because they do not know what they are entitled to claim.

1. Remote Area Allowances

Living in the NT comes with unique tax benefits. If you receive a remote area allowance or Living Away From Home Allowance, specific rules apply to how these are taxed and what additional expenses may be deductible.

2. Work-Related Vehicle Expenses

If you drive your personal vehicle between job sites, to client meetings, or for work-related errands, you can claim a deduction. Many workers only use the cents-per-kilometre method and miss the more generous logbook method if they drive frequently for work.

3. Home Office Expenses

The ATO's 67 cents per hour fixed rate method makes claiming home office expenses straightforward. Many workers forget this entirely, or don't realise that separate internet, phone and equipment costs may also be deductible.

4. Work Clothing and Uniforms

Compulsory uniforms, protective clothing and occupation-specific items are deductible. The cost of laundering these items is also claimable. Generic work clothing (smart casual) does not qualify, but many industry-specific garments do.

5. Self-Education and Training

Any study or training that directly relates to your current employment is deductible. This includes course fees, textbooks, travel to the training venue and stationery.

Key Reminder

To claim any work-related deduction, you must have paid the expense yourself (not been reimbursed), it must directly relate to earning your income, and you must have a record to prove it. Keep your receipts.

6–10. More Missed Deductions

  • Tools and equipment — items under $300 claimed immediately; higher-value items depreciated over their useful life
  • Phone and internet — the work-related proportion of your personal phone and home internet bills
  • Union and professional fees — membership fees and professional association subscriptions, often $200–$1,000+ annually
  • Tax agent fees — the fee you paid last year to have your return prepared is deductible this year
  • Income protection insurance — premiums paid outside of superannuation are fully tax deductible
